CPS 99 and Copic Tutorial
This just in: the new Cosmo Cricket Spring Lines are now online--check them out! I can't wait to get my hand on this stuff--especially Girl Friday and Lil' Man! Hmmm . . . and some Snorkel to go with that new Kim Hughes fish set?
___________
This week's CPS Sketch 99 is sponsored by DRS Designs; I chose the Plant Shelf stamp and paired it with some K and Company Blue Awning papers. I took some step-by-step pictures as I colored the image with my Copic markers, thinking that it might be helpful on any plant greenery.
First, I stamped the image on PaperTrey Stamper's Select White cardstock in Tuxedo Black Memento ink, and cut and embossed it with a SpellbindersLabels die. I left the die in place and used it as a stencil/mask to airbrush the background with B14 (top) and a C3 (bottom) Copic markers. You may notice that I did not mask anything other than the edges. I knew that the pale blue and gray would not adversely effect the colors that I was adding, except for the terra cotta pots. As pale as I was airbrushing, I knew that I could take my clear blender marker (o) and simply clean up that area before coloring it.
I chose a pale green, YG11, to give my plant leaves some color. I will cover most of this up before I'm finished, but it's a base coat. On the right you see only YG11, and on the left you will see both YG11 and some YG91, as the leaves start to turn a more natural shade for leaves.
In the photo above, I've added YG93 and YG95. The plant on the right has only YG11 and YG91 on its leaves, while the plant on the left has the mid-light tones and mid-dark tones added--YG93's and YG95's.
Above I've added some color to the center plant; I opted to give it cooler green leaves, like the silvery green on a rosemary plant, for variety. I used G21 as a base color, adding a bit of BG93 in the shadow areas.
On the terra cotta pots, I base coated with an E-13 marker. The center pot has only E-13 on it, with extra layer of E-13 added where you see some shading. Remember that you can achieve at least one value darker by simply layering a Copic color. On the left pot, I have added E-15 and just a tiny bit of E17 in the shadows.
In the picture above, all of the pots are finished; The E11 was used to blend and smooth the other colors without making the value significantly darker. (I generally use a light value marker to blend with rather than the clear blender pen since the clear blender pen pushes color entirely out of an area, if it gets saturated.) I didn't take a picture of the shelf after it was colored, but most of it is covered up in the card anyway.
I hope that this step-by-step process will help you in coloring with your Copic markers. Have a great day, and thanks for visiting!

Hi Debbie! This is beautiful! Thanks for the tutorial. I'll definitely give it a try. BTW, I'm thrilled to report that I got into Marianne Walker's Copic Certification class in Anaheim on the 24th (at CHA)! She had a few spots open to the general public, and I jumped at the chance. I'm over the moon!

I just saw the new CC and rushed over here to see if you had them. How can you stand it?? You must be beside yourself waiting with anticipation. I love it all. Good thing I am only on a stamp diet and not a paper diet. LOL!
And GREAT card and tutorial! You rock!

Your coloring is so realistic. Don't own any Copics (I know, have I been living in the dark ages) but I believe it is an excellent tutorital for any coloring medium. I am a colored pencil freak so I will adapt the tutorial to my colored pencils. Thanks bunches.
